Region of Peel council approves Climate Change Master Plan
The Region will lead by example, influence best practice and transform to a climate resilient future
Oct. 24, 2019 (Brampton, ON) – Today, Region of Peel council unanimously approved its first Climate Change Master Plan. The actions in the plan will reduce the Region’s corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45% by 2030 relative to 2010 levels. It will also make sure its services, operations, and infrastructure can adapt to the changing climate.
“No one can solve climate change alone,” said Nando Iannicca, Region of Peel Chair. “There has never been a more important time for municipalities to innovate and lead the way to a sustainable future.”
Highlights include:
- expanding renewable energy and green infrastructure at Regional buildings
- adding electric fleet vehicles and charging stations
- increasing disaster preparedness
- constructing or retrofitting Regional buildings to be at or near net zero carbon
The Plan calls for a $300-400 million investment over its lifetime. These investments will realize savings of $85M by 2030 and continue to have positive effects well into the future.
“Climate change is as much a social equity and health issue as it is an environmental issue,” said Christine Tu, Director, Office of Climate Change and Energy Management.
Local municipalities are the front line of climate change impacts. Peel has seen many severe weather events including major flooding, wind and ice storms. As these events happen more often, demands on Regional services like paramedics, police, affordable housing, waste management, water and wastewater will increase. The Plan will help protect residents and the Regional services they need as the climate changes.
The Region will continue to work with its municipal partners, conservation authorities and other groups from across Ontario to implement the Plan.
